Our ElevenLabs review
Our verdict
ElevenLabs is the benchmark for realistic AI voices. Reviewers consistently praise how natural the voices sound and how easy the tool is to use, and its cloning, language coverage and extra tools make it the most complete option in this category. The main complaint is the credit system, which many users find confusing and expensive for heavy use.
Our 4.6 out of 5 score is an editorial judgment based on features, pricing and user feedback. It loses points for the credit rules and for some billing and support complaints.
What it does
You paste a script, choose a voice and generate speech. Beyond that, ElevenLabs offers instant and professional voice cloning, dubbing for videos, sound effects and music, a studio for audiobooks and multi-voice projects, and a builder for voice agents. It also integrates with Zapier.
What users say
G2 lists more than 1,200 reviews, and users consistently praise the natural-sounding voices and the ease of use. The recurring complaints are about credits. Credits are used by retakes, so regenerating a sentence to fix a mispronounced technical term costs full credits. Several reviewers report that downgrading or cancelling wiped unused credits they had paid for, and some Trustpilot reviewers describe billing and support problems.
Languages
ElevenLabs lists 70+ languages on its newest model, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Malayalam and Kannada. Hindi is available on its main models and is generally described as well supported. Urdu and Bengali are only on the newest model, which limits each generation to 5,000 characters. One review rates Tamil, Telugu and Bengali as fair, with fewer voices, so test your language first.
Pricing
The Free plan gives 10,000 credits a month, about 10 minutes of speech, with no commercial license, no voice cloning and a requirement to credit ElevenLabs. Starter costs $6 a month for about 30 minutes, with a commercial license and instant cloning. Creator costs $22 a month and adds professional cloning. Pro costs $99 a month. One credit is normally one character, and about 1,000 characters make a minute of audio. Paid plans roll unused credits over for up to two months while your subscription is active, but downgrading or cancelling forfeits them at the end of the billing cycle, and the Free plan has no rollover. Prices and allowances have changed over time, so check the pricing page. Our guide to ElevenLabs credits explains how they work.
Where it falls short
Credits are used up faster than the sticker price implies, free-plan audio can’t be used commercially, and support is reported to be slow to reach a human on billing issues.
Who should use it
Choose ElevenLabs if realism, cloning or multiple languages matter most. Skip it if you want predictable monthly minutes (Murf or WellSaid) or a free tool with commercial rights (TTSMaker). See our list of ElevenLabs alternatives or compare Fish Audio vs ElevenLabs.
