The most common complaint about ElevenLabs is its credit system. Credits are charged per generation, they cover more than text to speech, and the rules for rollover and cancellation catch people out. This guide explains how credits work, what each action costs, what happens to unused credits and how to avoid wasting them. For the tool itself, read our ElevenLabs review.
What is a credit?
For text to speech on the standard Multilingual models, one text character costs one credit. About 1,000 characters make roughly a minute of speech. So a plan with 30,000 credits gives you about 30 minutes, and the Free plan’s 10,000 credits give about 10 minutes, if text to speech is all you use.
On some faster models, such as Flash and Turbo, the cost is lower, about 0.5 to 1 credit per character on the API, depending on the model and your plan. Check which model your account is using, because costs differ.
Credits by plan
As of late October 2026, ElevenLabs lists Free at 10,000 credits a month, Starter at $6 a month with 30,000, Creator at $22 with 121,000 and Pro at $99 with 600,000. Starter adds the commercial license and instant cloning, and Creator adds professional cloning. Allowances and prices have changed over time, and older articles quote different numbers, so check the pricing page.
What else uses credits
Credits are one pool for everything, not only speech. ElevenLabs’ published rates include about 330 credits per minute for speech to text, 900 credits per minute for generated music, 200 credits per sound effect generation, 1,000 credits per minute for the voice changer and voice isolator, and 2,000 credits per minute for dubbing. That means previewing sound effects or music just to hear them can use a surprising share of a small plan.
Credits are charged per generation
Credits are deducted when you generate, not when you download. If you change one comma and regenerate, you’re charged again. If you audition five voices with a long paragraph, that’s five charges. This is why reviewers say credits disappear faster than the headline numbers suggest, and why correcting a mispronounced term costs full credits.
Rollover, downgrading and cancelling
This is where most of the frustration comes from.
Paid plans. According to ElevenLabs’ pricing page, unused credits roll over for up to two months, up to twice your monthly quota, as long as your subscription stays active.
Downgrading or cancelling. Unused credits are forfeited at the end of the billing cycle. Reviewers report this as a common surprise.
Upgrading. Unused credits from your old plan roll into the next billing cycle.
Free plan. No rollover.
Top-ups. Pay-as-you-go credits are separate and aren’t subject to the rollover cap.
So use your credits before you downgrade or cancel, and check your balance first.
How to stop wasting credits
Finish the script first. Edit and proofread before you generate, so you don’t pay for rewrites.
Audition voices with a short sample. Use one or two sentences, not the whole script.
Keep a pronunciation list. Respell tricky names in the script from the start so you don’t regenerate.
Avoid previewing extras you don’t need. Sound effects, music and dubbing use credits quickly.
Use cheaper models for drafts if you have them. Draft with a lower-cost model, then generate the final version with your preferred one. Check which models your plan and interface offer.
Generate in sections. If you regenerate, you only repeat one section, not the whole script.
Track your balance. Check what a test script used before you plan a month of work.
Watch the length limits. Web generations have per-request character limits, and longer work is better handled in the long-form studio.
When a different pricing model suits you better
If you want predictable minutes, compare tools that sell hours or minutes instead of credits. Murf lists allowances in hours, and WellSaid caps download minutes with unlimited generation. If you only need free voiceovers you can publish, see our guide to free AI voice generators, and for more options read our list of ElevenLabs alternatives.
