Our verdict

For voiceovers, ElevenLabs is the better choice. Its voices are widely regarded as the most realistic, it covers 70+ languages, and its cloning and extra tools go further. Speechify is the better choice if you mainly want to listen to documents, which is what its reader app is built for.

In our reviews ElevenLabs scores 4.6 out of 5 and Speechify 3.9. The score gap reflects voiceover use. If you want a reader, Speechify’s score understates how well it does that job.

Key differences

Product structure. ElevenLabs is one platform for text to speech, cloning, dubbing and sound effects. Speechify has three separate products: the Reader app, Speechify Studio for voiceovers and a developer API.

Commercial rights. ElevenLabs includes a commercial license from its $6 Starter plan. Speechify’s terms say its main app isn’t for commercial use, and only Studio includes commercial rights.

Voice cloning. ElevenLabs offers instant cloning from Starter and professional cloning from Creator. Speechify Studio lists cloning on its paid plans, though one review rates its cloning quality as basic.

Languages. ElevenLabs lists 70+ languages, with Hindi well supported. Speechify Studio lists Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu among the languages for its voices with delivery instructions. See our guide to AI voice generators for Indian languages.

Free plans. ElevenLabs gives about 10 minutes a month with no commercial license and attribution required. Speechify’s Reader free plan has 10 voices and speeds up to 1.5x, and Studio’s free plan gives 600 credits with no commercial rights.

User feedback. ElevenLabs reviewers praise the realism, but complain about credits and lost credits on downgrade. Speechify reviewers like its apps and pacing, but report charges after cancellation and say quality varies by voice.

Pricing compared

ElevenLabs costs $6 a month for Starter (about 30 minutes), $22 for Creator and $99 for Pro. Speechify Reader Premium costs $29 a month or $139 a year. Speechify Studio Starter costs $19 a month or $100 a year, and Creator costs $49 a month or $300 a year. Credits aren’t directly comparable between the two, so check how much audio each plan gives. Prices change often, so confirm on both pricing pages.

Can you use both?

Yes. Some people use Speechify’s reader for listening and ElevenLabs for producing audio they publish.
