Our Speechify review
Our verdict
Speechify is really two products under one name. The reader app is built for listening to documents and is popular with students and heavy readers. Speechify Studio is the voiceover product for creators, and independent reviewers praise its natural pacing. The catch is that they are separate subscriptions, only Studio includes commercial rights, and billing complaints are common.
Our 3.9 out of 5 score is an editorial judgment based on features, pricing and user feedback. It loses points for the confusing product split and cancellation complaints.
Reader, Studio and the API
Speechify Reader reads articles, PDFs and books aloud. Speechify Studio creates voiceovers, dubbing and voice clones you can export. SpeechifyAI is a separate developer API. Speechify’s terms say its main app is not for commercial use, and only Studio allows that.
What users say
Reviewers like the voices, the pacing and the many apps for different devices. The most consistent criticisms are about billing. Reviewers report charges after cancellation and difficulty cancelling, and some find the paid reader plan expensive for casual use. Some also say the free voices sound robotic and that quality varies between voices on Studio.
How much does Speechify cost?
The Reader app has a free plan with 10 voices and speeds up to 1.5x. Reader Premium costs $29 a month or $139 a year. Speechify Studio has its own plans. Studio Starter costs $19 a month or $100 a year, and Studio Creator costs $49 a month or $300 a year. Prices and credit allowances differ between sources, so check the pricing page.
Is Speechify free?
Yes, but only as a test. The reader’s free plan is limited. Studio’s free plan gives 600 credits, with no voice cloning and no commercial rights, so you can’t use that audio in monetised videos.
Where it falls short
Three subscriptions can be confusing, the free plans are for testing only, and cloning quality is described by one review as basic compared with dedicated cloning tools.
Who should use it
Choose Speechify Reader if you mainly want to listen to documents, and Studio if you want affordable voiceovers with commercial rights. Skip it if you want the most realistic voices (ElevenLabs) or a free tool with commercial use (TTSMaker). See our Speechify alternatives.
