Almost every AI video generator advertises a free plan, but “free” can mean very different things. Some give you a few watermarked videos a month, some give you a one-time deposit of credits, and some give you a trial that ends in two weeks. This guide explains what free plans really include, shows the limits of six popular tools, and gives you a simple way to test them without wasting time or money.
What “free” usually means
A free plan stays available but is limited, for example a few videos or credits a month.
A one-time credit deposit gives you a fixed number of credits that never refill.
A free trial gives full access for a short time, then asks you to pay.
Free plans usually restrict one or more of these:
Watermarks. The tool’s logo appears on your video.
Length and resolution. Short clips at 720p are common.
Credits or minutes. Once they are used up, you wait for the reset or pay.
Downloads. Some free plans let you preview or share a link but not download the file.
Commercial rights. Many free plans restrict use in monetised videos, ads or client work.
Free plans of six popular tools
These details come from our reviews. Plans change often, so check each tool’s pricing page.
HeyGen. A permanent free plan with 3 videos a month of up to 1 minute each, with a watermark at 720p. One review reports that free-plan output is licensed for personal evaluation only, so check the terms before using it commercially. See our HeyGen review.
Synthesia. A free plan with 10 minutes a month and 9 stock avatars, but videos keep Synthesia’s logo and can only be shared by link, not downloaded. See our Synthesia review.
InVideo AI. A free plan with limited weekly credits and watermarked exports, mainly for testing. Many users report credits running out quickly, so keep a close eye on your balance. See our InVideo AI review.
Fliki. A free plan with a small monthly allowance, a watermark, 720p export, about 300 voices and no commercial rights. See our Fliki review.
Runway. A one-time deposit of 125 credits that never refills, enough for about two clips from its newest model, with a watermark. See our Runway review.
Pictory. No permanent free plan, only a 14-day trial with 3 projects and watermarked 720p exports, and no credit card needed. See our Pictory review.
Other free options people mention
Other tools, such as Kling, Pika and Google’s Veo models, are often recommended for free generation. Reviewers report daily or monthly free credits for some of them, but their reports about watermarks, resolution and commercial use disagree, and the offers change often, so check each tool’s current terms before relying on them. We have not reviewed them in detail.
Is there a completely free AI video generator with no watermark?
Be sceptical of “unlimited and free”. Hosted tools pay for computing power, so free tiers are almost always limited by credits, resolution, length or rights. Some tools report watermark-free output within small daily limits, and some open-source models can run on your own computer without a watermark, but those need technical skills and capable hardware. For most people, expect to pay for a plan if you want a clean, publishable video.
What to check before you use free output publicly
Commercial rights. Can you use the video in a monetised channel, an ad or client work?
Watermarks. Will they hurt your channel’s look?
Downloads. Can you actually export the file?
Credits. Do they reset monthly, or are they a one-time deposit?
Disclosure. If the video contains realistic synthetic content, use YouTube’s altered or synthetic content setting. Our guide to monetizing AI-generated videos explains the rules.
A simple way to test free plans
- Write one short script of about 30 seconds.
- Run it through two or three tools that fit your format.
- Compare the look, the voice, how much editing it needed and what each one used up.
- Keep the one that needs the least editing, and only then look at paid plans.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI video generator?
It depends on the format. HeyGen’s free plan is useful for testing avatars, Synthesia’s for presenter videos, and Runway’s deposit for trying generated clips. See our full list of the best AI video generators.
Can I use free AI videos on YouTube?
Only if the tool’s terms allow it. Some free plans restrict commercial use, and monetisation depends on YouTube’s rules.
Why do free AI videos have watermarks?
Watermarks promote the tool and encourage you to upgrade.
Are free AI video generators safe?
Stick to well-known tools, avoid sites that ask for unusual permissions or payment details for a free plan, and read the terms.
