Our Runway review
Our verdict
Runway is the most creative-focused tool in this category. Instead of assembling stock footage, it generates new video clips from a text prompt or an image, and reviewers consistently rank its recent models among the most visually consistent. It suits filmmakers, designers and creators who want original footage or effects. It is not a tool for turning a script into a finished explainer.
Our 4.3 out of 5 score is an editorial judgment based on features, pricing and user feedback. It loses points because credits run out quickly and clips are short.
What it does
You describe a scene or upload an image, and Runway generates a short clip. You can then refine it with tools such as motion brush and green screen, upscale it and combine clips in the editor. Runway’s Gen-4.5 model costs 12 credits per second at the published rate, so 60 credits buys a 5-second clip.
What users say
Reviewers describe Runway’s latest model as one of the most consistent AI video generators available, and it leans toward professional and narrative work, while competitors such as Kling aim more at high-volume social content. The main complaint is credit cost. Standard’s 625 credits give about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video, and because most clips need retries, one competitor’s analysis estimates only 6 to 9 usable 10-second clips on Pro.
Pricing
The Free plan gives 125 credits once, which don’t refresh, enough for about two Gen-4.5 clips, and videos carry a watermark. Standard costs $15 a month, or $12 billed annually, for 625 credits. Pro costs $35 a month, or $28 billed annually, for 2,250 credits. Max costs $95 a month, or $76 billed annually, for 9,500 credits. On Standard and Pro, unused credits reset each month. Which models the free plan includes changes and shows after you log in, so check before you rely on it.
Where it falls short
Credits go quickly, so budget by seconds of finished video, including retries. Clips are short, so a longer video needs many generations stitched together. Runway doesn’t write scripts, add narration or build scenes for you the way InVideo AI or Pictory do.
Who should use it
Choose Runway if you want original, cinematic generated footage or visual effects. Skip it if you need a talking presenter (HeyGen or Synthesia) or a fast stock-footage explainer (Fliki).
