Our HeyGen review

Our verdict

HeyGen is one of the strongest tools for presenter-style video. You write a script, pick an AI avatar or create your own, and HeyGen produces a talking-head video in many languages, which suits explainers, product demos, training and translated content. Reddit and review-site users commonly praise the avatar quality. The weak point is cost: premium avatars burn through credits fast.

Our 4.4 out of 5 score is an editorial judgment based on features, pricing and user feedback. It loses points because the credit system makes heavy use expensive.

What it does

You choose an avatar, add a script and a voice, and HeyGen generates the video. You can create a digital twin of yourself, clone your voice and translate existing videos into other languages with lip sync. Paid plans remove the watermark and unlock 1080p export, more avatars and 175+ languages and dialects.

What users say

Users on Reddit describe the avatars as best in the field and the platform as widely used. The complaints are about cost and credits. Avatar IV, the most realistic avatar tier, uses 20 credits per minute of video, so the Creator plan’s 600 credits cover about 30 minutes, and fewer if you re-render. Some users also dislike that previews require downloads, and reports of Avatar IV render times range from 15 to 45 minutes at 1080p, with longer waits at 4K.

Plans and credit rules have changed over time. One review notes that Creator lost unlimited video generation earlier this year, and older articles quote different limits, so use current information.

Pricing

The Free plan is permanent and gives 3 videos a month of up to 1 minute each, with a watermark at 720p. Creator costs $29 a month, or $24 a month billed annually, with 600 credits and a watermark-free 1080p export. Pro starts at $49 a month with 1,000 credits and 4K export, and Business costs $149 a month plus $20 for each extra seat. Check HeyGen’s terms before using free-plan output commercially, since one review reports it is licensed for personal evaluation only.

Where it falls short

Heavy users will hit the credit ceiling and need a higher plan. The free plan is for testing, not publishing. HeyGen is built around avatars, so it isn’t the tool for stock-footage explainers or cinematic clips.

Who should use it

Choose HeyGen for talking-head videos, localisation and training content. Skip it if you want stock-footage videos from a blog post (Pictory or InVideo AI) or generated cinematic clips (Runway). The closest alternative is Synthesia.
