Our verdict

It’s a tie because they suit different users. HeyGen is the more flexible tool for creators and marketers, with photo avatars, voice cloning and lip-synced video translation. Synthesia is the more polished choice for business and training video, and its minute-based plans are easier to predict than HeyGen’s credits.

Both score 4.4 out of 5 in our reviews. If you are unsure, start with both free plans and make the same short video in each.

Key differences

Who they are built for. Reviewers describe HeyGen as popular with creators and marketers and Synthesia as a leader for training and business communication.

How they charge. HeyGen uses credits, and its premium Avatar IV uses 20 credits per minute, so the Creator plan’s 600 credits cover about 30 minutes. Synthesia sells video minutes, with Creator at 30 minutes a month, which most teams find easier to budget. Every revision uses minutes or credits in both.

Languages. HeyGen lists 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans, and Synthesia lists 140+.

Translation and cloning. Video translation with lip sync and voice cloning are core parts of HeyGen. Check Synthesia’s current feature list for what its plans include.

Training features. SCORM export starts on HeyGen’s Business plan, while it is listed as Enterprise-only on Synthesia.

Free plans. HeyGen’s free plan gives 3 videos a month of up to 1 minute with a watermark. Synthesia’s gives 10 minutes a month with 9 stock avatars, but videos keep its logo and can only be shared by link.

Pricing compared

HeyGen’s Creator plan costs $29 a month, or $24 billed annually, and Pro starts at $49. Synthesia’s Starter is listed at $29 a month, or $18 billed annually, and Creator at $89 a month, or $64 billed annually. Synthesia’s prices differ between 2026 sources, with reports of a mid-2026 price cut, so check both pricing pages before you pay.

Can you use both?

Yes, and some teams do, for example HeyGen for social and translated content and Synthesia for formal training. Both have free plans, so you can compare them on the same script without paying.
