Our Khanmigo for Teachers review
Our verdict
Khanmigo for Teachers is the strongest free option for structured planning help. It guides you through lesson plans, rubrics, exit tickets and differentiation, and it comes from a nonprofit with its own content library. It is most useful if you already use Khan Academy, and it is a good second tool even if you don’t. Expect useful first drafts rather than polished material.
Our 4.0 out of 5 score is an editorial judgment based on features, price and reviewer feedback. It loses points for generic output and a smaller toolset than the leading all-in-one platforms.
What it does
The Teacher Tools area contains more than 25 activities, organised into categories like Create, Differentiate, Plan and Support. You pick an activity, enter details such as grade and learning objective, and Khanmigo generates a draft. Tools include a lesson planner, rubric generator, exit tickets, a leveler, text chunking, class newsletters and report card comments. If you use Khan Academy with your class, Recommend Assignments suggests content, and Class Snapshot summarises the last seven days of activity.
Documents are saved in your account and can be exported to Word, Google Drive, OneDrive or PDF. Lesson plans and exit tickets can also go to PowerPoint or Google Slides, and quizzes to Google Forms.
What teachers say
A pilot run by Michigan Virtual found teachers valued Khanmigo for brainstorming questions, writing lesson hooks, reviewing content and suggesting activities, and their confidence in using AI for planning grew over the pilot. Independent reviewers are more measured. One described the lesson plan, exit ticket and rubric tools as adequate and often generic unless you give very specific prompts, with the real value being time saved on routine tasks.
Reviewers also stress that the tool should support your judgment. A generated lesson can look polished while assuming too much about students’ background knowledge, technology or time. Treat each plan as a planning conversation and check it against your curriculum.
Pricing
Khanmigo’s teacher tools are free to teachers in nearly every country, with a few regional exceptions. You need a Khan Academy account with the teacher role and a supported language, and Khan Academy keeps a page listing availability by country. Paid subscriptions for learners and parents are currently limited to the United States. Districts can request pricing for teacher and student access, rostering and single sign-on.
Khanmigo supports many languages, including Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese. Khan Academy says only English, Hindi, Spanish and Portuguese have been fully quality-tested, so have a fluent speaker check materials in other languages.
Where it falls short
Free teacher access does not automatically give your students the Khanmigo tutor. That is available through specific school arrangements. Output quality varies by subject and task, and the toolset is smaller than MagicSchool’s. Avoid entering student names or sensitive details into any AI tool unless your school has approved it.
Who should use it
Choose Khanmigo if you want free, structured help with planning and differentiation, or you already use Khan Academy. Skip it if you want a broader platform with many more templates (MagicSchool AI), live interactive lessons (Curipod) or feedback inside Google Docs (Brisk Teaching).
