Our verdict
MagicSchool AI is the better all-rounder, with a bigger toolset and a low-cost paid plan if you outgrow the free one. Khanmigo is the better pick for teachers who already use Khan Academy, or who want a free structured assistant that guides them step by step.
Because both are free to try, the practical answer is to run each on the same task and keep the one that needs less editing. MagicSchool scores 4.5 out of 5 in our reviews and Khanmigo 4.0.
Key differences
Breadth. MagicSchool covers lesson plans, rubrics, quizzes, leveled texts, IEP drafts, report card comments and parent emails. Khanmigo’s tools cover planning, assessment, differentiation and communication, but there are fewer of them.
Content library. Khanmigo connects to Khan Academy. If you use the platform, it can recommend assignments and summarise class activity over the last seven days. MagicSchool has no content library of its own.
Output quality. Both produce first drafts. One reviewer described Khanmigo’s lesson plan, exit ticket and rubric tools as often generic unless you give specific prompts, while MagicSchool’s output also needs a teacher’s edit.
Student access. Free Khanmigo teacher access does not automatically give your students the Khanmigo tutor, which is available through specific school arrangements. Which MagicSchool student tools come with which plan varies between sources, so check before relying on them.
Eligibility. Khanmigo’s teacher tools are free in nearly every country, with a few regional exceptions, and you need a Khan Academy account with the teacher role and a supported language. MagicSchool offers a free plan with no expiry.
Pricing compared
MagicSchool AI is free, with Plus at $12.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed annually for unlimited generations, history, AI editing and slides. Khanmigo’s teacher tools are free, and districts can request pricing for teacher and student access, rostering and single sign-on. Check both pricing pages before paying.
Can you use both?
Yes. Both are free, so you can use MagicSchool for report card comments and parent emails and Khanmigo for Khan Academy-linked planning. Compare the results on one task and keep what helps.
