Our verdict
It’s a tie because they solve different problems. If your classroom challenge is a wide range of reading levels, Diffit is the stronger choice, and independent reviewers describe its text leveling as the best in the category. If you want one platform for most of your planning and paperwork, MagicSchool AI is the better fit.
Many teachers will benefit from using both. Diffit scores 4.4 out of 5 in our reviews and MagicSchool AI 4.5.
Key differences
Focus. Diffit turns a topic, link or passage into versions at different levels, with vocabulary and questions. MagicSchool covers lesson plans, rubrics, quizzes, leveled texts, IEP drafts and parent emails.
Leveling quality. Diffit’s reading levels were checked against readability formulas in a community test and found close to the level claimed, though not perfect. MagicSchool includes leveled texts as one of many tools, and a review notes that leveled output still needs teacher review.
Student data. Diffit is teacher-only and collects no student data. MagicSchool is built for schools and offers a district tier for privacy and admin needs.
Features behind a paywall. Diffit’s Google and Microsoft export, longer inputs and standards alignment need a paid school license. MagicSchool’s Plus plan adds unlimited generations, history, AI editing and exports.
Pricing compared
Both have free plans. Diffit offers a 60-day trial of Premium features for new accounts, then reverts to the free version unless a school buys a license, which is a flat annual rate based on school size. Some review sites list an individual Premium plan at about $14.99 a month, so check what Diffit offers when you sign up. MagicSchool Plus costs $12.99 a month, or $8.33 a month billed annually.
Can you use both?
Yes, and it works well. Use MagicSchool for planning documents and parent communication, and Diffit when you need one text at several reading levels. Both have free plans, so you can try each without paying.
